The app

What ate. does, and how.

ate. turns everyday dining into a permanent, searchable record of the dishes people love — rate specific dishes, share them with friends, and find the best version of anything in the city.

Who it's for

People who order the same dish everywhere to compare — and everyone who's tired of restaurant reviews that average the best thing on the menu with the worst. If you've ever said "the place is mid but the dumplings are elite", ate. is built for you.

Ratings, not reviews

A restaurant review scores an experience: service, room, prices, and food all blended together. An ate. rating scores one dish — a 1.0 to 10.0 for the plate in front of you, with a photo and a short note if you want. Dishes come from a curated catalog of 92 types, so everyone rating "butter chicken" is rating the same thing, and scores can be compared honestly across the city.

The ate. feed showing friends' dish ratings: an 8.5 breakfast sandwich and an 8.7 Michigan-style hot dog, each with its score.
The feed — what your friends ate, scored out of 10.
A dish post: Michigan-style hot dogs rated 8.7 out of 10, with a photo, a note, and a take from a friend.
Every dish gets its own page — photo, score, and takes.
The Rated tab listing your own dish history with scores, filters, and repeat visits.
Rated — your personal dish history, ranked.

How community averages work

Every rating is attached to an exact dish type at an exact restaurant. All members' scores for that dish at that place are averaged together, and those averages build each dish's city leaderboard. Private and friends-only ratings count toward the averages too — anonymously, without ever being shown as yours.

Who sees your ratings

You choose per rating, every time you post:

  • Everyone — visible in the app and on public share pages like this site.
  • Friends — visible only to people you follow who follow you back.
  • Just me — visible only to you.

You can change a rating's visibility later, and your email address is never public. The full detail is in the privacy policy.

Your content, your controls

  • Edit or delete any of your own ratings, photos, and takes at any time.
  • Report any post or take that breaks the community rules — reports are reviewed promptly.
  • Block anyone to stop seeing them and stop them seeing you.
  • Delete your account from inside the app (You → Delete account) — it permanently removes your account and content.
